From shipping order to pickup

The right information before the goods leave

A transport order connects your shipping planning with your logistics partner’s processes. With EDI, the data is available electronically and you reduce the manual effort at this handover.

Less double entry

Existing order data is passed on electronically. Your team doesn’t have to re-enter it in a separate application for every shipment.

Plan pickups better

Your logistics partner receives the order information for its planning. That way the transport can be prepared before the shipment is picked up.

Assign shipments clearly

The transmitted information links the transport order to the intended recipient. This makes matching easier for the logistics partner.

Plan for a change of partner

Do you work with several logistics partners? A coordinated data exchange helps you integrate their different format requirements into your shipping process.

How the data gets there

With EDI from the ERP to the logistics partner

The EDI format IFTMIN is often used for the electronic transport order. This message sends the instructions for a specific shipment to the carrier. Which formats and data are required depends on your partner. When setting up the connection, your ERP, the recipient’s specifications and the desired process are aligned with each other. Depending on the service provider, XML can also play a role.

Starting point: Your transport and recipient information is in the ERP.

Message format: The data is prepared for the exchange agreed with the partner.

Handover: The logistics partner receives the electronic transport order.

Optional return channel: If the partner supports IFTSTA, status messages about the transport can come back.

Prepare your connection

Does EDI fit your logistics process?

Bring your ERP, your logistics partners and the processes you want to the consultation. Together we clarify which messages you want to exchange and which requirements apply to your connection. That turns a general plan into a concrete next step.

FAQ on EDI in logistics

What is IFTMIN and what is the message used for?
IFTMIN is a UN/EDIFACT standard message for transport instructions. A shipper uses it to send information and instructions about a shipment to the commissioned carrier. Which details are required in your case is agreed with the respective partner.
Which logistics partners can I connect?
The specific connection depends on your logistics partner, its message format and your system. So clarify in advance which service providers you want to include and what requirements they set for the data exchange. These requirements form the basis for assessing your connection.
Do all partners have to use the same data format?
No. The requirements can differ. In logistics, EDIFACT messages and XML formats are among those used. What matters is which format the respective recipient expects. These specifications have to be taken into account when the data exchange is set up.
Can I also receive status messages about the transport?
Some logistics partners provide status messages via IFTSTA, for example on pickup or delivery. This return channel is not available with every partner by default. Whether and which messages can be used for your process is checked as part of the connection.
What should I prepare for the consultation?
Helpful details include your ERP, the logistics partners you want and the processes you want to handle electronically. If you already have technical specifications from your partners, bring them along. Also state whether you only want to send transport orders or also receive status messages.
